I grew up in an old house in Cleveland, Ohio raised by a father who was a school teacher (summers off) and probably the cheapest man alive (yes still going at 93). I didn't know one hired a contractor till we needed a full new roof on the house when I was 14. We lived in the same house since I was 2, and anything needing fixed or updated was done by my dad, and later me. As I grew older he first started showing me how to help, then demanding I do the maintenance and improvements. This included skills like painting, hanging wallpaper, plumbing, electrical, roofing. We also added a foundation and a new roof to the detached garage that was built on dirt. The list goes on and on for a house built in 1917.
I owned my own Victorian home in the Hudson River Valley while living in NY, built in 1890. I did a complete gut renovation on one of the bathrooms, and restored much of the old architectural details to like new condition.
While working for companies full time, I continued renovations and improvements in all the places I have lived over the years, gaining more and more experience and knowledge. Here in Jackson I became frustrated with the lack of competence of the contractors who showed (or didn't) to our home, and thought this would be a great way to earn a living, work in town and fill a much needed hole for the community here in Jackson.
